Technical schools win grants

Sampson Community College, Clinton, N.C., was awarded more than $1 million in grant funding through the U.S. Department of Commerce to assist with the construction of a welding and metal fabrication building. The facility will replace a smaller shop area used for welding construction that is currently housed in a 25-year old metal building. Local industries will assist in writing the curriculum used to train the workers, and have a larger pool of trained individuals to pull from when hiring. Franklin County Technical School, a four-year public high school in Turner Falls, Mass., recently landed a $495,000 state grant to completely refurbish its welding and fabrication shop, and to integrate it with digital design, robotics and other modern advancements. Franklin Tech is one of 32 schools across the state to win awards, and will build upon the school’s commitment to training metalworkers.
